The effectiveness of ball-type valves depends greatly upon the tightness of its seal, as a leaking seal allows air to enter the pump during priming, or water to escape when operating. Also, other abrasive materials in the water being pumped can score and roughen the surfaces of the valve parts. The design of the ball and seal have the greatest effect on the life and performance of the discharge valve.
